Tooth Extraction

What is tooth extraction?

In some cases, removing a tooth completely from its spot in the jaw bone may be necessary to preserve or improve your dental health.

What are the reasons for tooth extraction?

For braces: Correction of malaligned teeth with orthodontic treatment might involve removal of one or more teeth.

Impacted teeth: Wisdom teeth are often removed if there is no space for them in the mouth, or if they become impacted or infected.

Due to damage or decay: Tooth extraction may be the only option if a tooth is too decayed or damaged to be repaired with a filling or crown.

In radiation or chemotherapy patients: If radiation or chemotherapy to the head and neck is advised, sometimes removing infected teeth may be necessary.

What are the complications of tooth extraction?

Sore Jaw: Occasionally, the jaw may be sore due to anesthesia or due to the strain of keeping your mouth open during the procedure.

Numb Lips and Chin: In the case of removal of lower wisdom teeth, sometimes the lower lip or chin may be numb for a few days or months if a nerve in that area was traumatized. Although the probability of this is very rare.

Infection: Infection is always a possibility after teeth extraction, but it is unlikely in individuals who have healthy immune systems. In addition, medications prescribed by dentists can reduce the possibility and severity of the occurrence of infections.

Some may experience swelling, pain, and at times delayed healing. Usually, your dentist is equipped to handle this and one must contact them immediately.
