How is adapting to new dentures?

Most patients need to learn how to use removable dentures properly when they get a new set. And it is normal to experience some discomfort and irritation initially. This will happen even if you are a previous denture wearer and got a new set. There could be difficulty in chewing, increased salivation, changed pronunciation. But after a while, you should be able to eat fairly normally, but it may take more time to get comfortable with harder or sticky foods. The salivation will also be back to normal and speech will become clearer gradually. In some cases using a small amount of denture adhesive may help stabilize the dentures and help hold them in place while you learn how to get comfortable with them. Your mouth will get accustomed to them but the period of adapting may vary in individuals.

What is the Home-care routine for the Dentures?

It is important to clean your dentures daily to remove food and plaque to minimize dentures from staining. Special denture brushes and cleaning aids are available and your dentist will guide you regarding the use of them. Do not use regular toothpaste on your dentures. After cleaning & rinsing dentures thoroughly soak them in water solution overnight. It is preferable to remove dentures overnight, as this will give your gums and bone a chance to relax from the pressure of the denture during the day.

What is Denture relining and repair?

If the dentures no longer fit as well as they once did, they can be re-fitted by the procedure called Denture relining, where the denture base is modified to fit better. You can check with your prosthodontist if your dentures can be relined to have a tighter better fit.

Repair of the dentures is done in case of broken or cracked dentures. Do not use ill-fitting broken dentures and report to the dentist immediately to avoid problems in chewing and sore spots. If the damage to the denture is extensive or if the dentures are old and worn-out, it is advisable to get new ones made.

What are the consequences of long-time denture use?

Once the teeth are removed, the jaw bone shrinks and changes in shape. So, dentures need to be checked every year and may require to be refabricated when they are not fitting properly usually after 5-10 years. Also, it is important that you take your dentures out at night to allow your gum tissues to rest and decrease the possibility of sore spots.

Is it possible to have dentures put in the same day as teeth removal?

​

Yes, it is possible to have your teeth removed and dentures put in the same day. These dentures are called immediate dentures and you should talk to your prosthodontist to see if that treatment is the best for you. But remember immediate dentures are temporary dentures and will need replacement in few months by permanent dentures.
